Penny Simpkin is a recognized expert in pregnancy, childbirth and newborn care. This is an excellent resource.
A MUST read.
The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth by Sheila Kitzinger
A “no nonsense” wonderful book containing lots of detail on the normal birth process and postpartum.
A solid resource to have on hand.
Christian Childbirth Handbook by Jennifer Vanderlaan
If you are wanting to incorporate your christian faith in this special journey, this book is for you.
It is really well written and walks with you through your journey, so you will want to start early.
This author also has other wonderful christian resources available.
Highly recommended reading.
Birthing From Within by Pam England
Pam England is very supportive of personal awareness during pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
This book is about being aware of the subconscious stuff that happens during birth and postpartum.
She focuses on birth art and non-traditional pain coping ideas.
If you only read it for the pain coping ideas it would be worth it.
Thinking Woman’s Guide to a Better Birth by Henci Goer
This book is very insightful.
It eloquently challenges the status quo of American birth by making sure that women are informed of the standard practices and the potential consequences.
Thought provoking with solid research from a trained and knowledgeable author.
The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin
An essential for your birth bag! Not a read-through-while-pregnant book, but the tabs make it an excellent reference for DURING labor.
(Hint: get it for dads!)
Gentle Birth Choices by Barbara Harper, R.N.
Barbara addresses the many choices that a pregnant mother has for her birth experience.
Gentle Birth Choices has a great list of questions to ask your care provider. There is also a corresponding video available.
If you are interested in water birth, this is a great book for you.
Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin
A great collection of positive birth stories.
Ina May’s commitment to caring for and believing in women during their birth journey is both evident and delightful.
This book is also full of solid, practical information that is pertinent to pregnancy and birth.
The Nursing Mother’s Companion by Kathleen Huggins, R.N., M.S.
This book helps you feel confident in your nursing abilities.
It contains a survival guide for the first 2 months, the safety of drugs during nursing, and help through the later months.
It also addresses unique breastfeeding challenges, and helps you to feel empowered in this part of your journey.
